Fact Check Friday 10/15/2020

Sen. Durbin has been in office for 37 years.  During his time in office, we have seen a widening of racial health disparities, increasing costs for premiums, deductibles, and soaring prescription drug costs.  African Americans are viewed as the least healthy ethnic group in America. Racial disparities have contributed to more African Americans and Latinos dying from preventable diseases.  Health care costs are the leading cause of bankruptcy in America.

A lot is made of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) also known as Obamacare, passed in 2010.  I agree with the goals of the ACA to reduce the number of uninsured, protect people with preexisting conditions, and reign in health care costs.  The facts demonstrate that there are a lot of problems with the ACA that Sen. Durbin refuses to address.  Too many Americans are worse off today under the current healthcare system that Sen. Durbin refuses to fix.  The issue of health care is personal to me.  I am a prostate cancer survivor. I will fight for the uninsured and people that lack access to health care.  I believe that health care is a right and not a privilege to be enjoyed by a select few.  Everyone deserves access to quality affordable healthcare.  Lets examine the facts.

Minority Whip Durbins Failed Record on Fixing the Affordable Care Act (ACA)

  • A recent study by Gallup revealed that 3 in 4 Americans believe they pay ‘too much’ for healthcare relative to the quality of care they receive. Additionally, 45 percent of the American public fears that a major health event will leave them bankrupt (Gallup: The U.S. Healthcare Crisis)
  • An overwhelming majority of Americans believe that government is not doing enough to ensure that prescription drug prices and healthcare costs, in general, remain affordable (77% and 74% respectively).  Americans do not believe that Democrats and Republicans will come together and pass bipartisan legislation to fix the healthcare system (Gallup)

  • Mayor Pete Buttigieg a Democrat said the healthcare system we have today is both unjust and inefficient.  Sen. Kamala Harris complains on the cost of health insurance, surprise bills, and prescription drugs are straining budgets and bankrupts families.  Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent says “Today, more than 30 million Americans still don’t have health insurance, and even more are underinsured.  Medical bills are the number one cause for Bankruptcy in America (AZ Central)

  • In 2019, the average monthly premium per enrollee in the individual market was up $515, up from $217 in 2011.  In 2020, the average deductible for a Silver Plan offered on Healthcare.gov was $4,500 up from $2,425 in 2014.

  • 67 percent of bankruptcy filers cite illness and medical bills as contributors to financial ruin (American Journal of Public Health)

  • Why has Sen. Durbin the second most powerful Democrat failed to fix the ACA?  Perhaps the powerful healthcare lobbyists control him and want ordinary citizens to pay more.
