Sen. Durbins Conflicts of Interest

Minority Whip Durbin has been in political office for 37 years straight.  During his time in office his wife, family members, former staff members, and current staff members have benefited from his public office.  Former President Obama has a political ad trying to convince the voters of Sen. Durbins integrity and ethics.  I respect President Obama, but the facts demonstrate a pattern of questionable ethics by Sen. Durbin.  As former President Lincoln said: You can fool all the people some of the time. And some of the people all time. But you cannot fool all the people all the time.”  Lets examine the facts regarding Sen. Durbins ethics.

Questionable Ethics:

  • Durbin aide Daniel Swanson sold between $4,000 and 60.000 in Mylan Pharmaceutical stock shortly before a major Justice Dept. settlement with the company became public.  He had inside information because the company had appeared before the Judiciary Committee where Sen. Durbin is a member (Politico)
  • Durbin’s wife began lobbying in 1998 and retired in 2014, Durbin acknowledged occasional overlap in which his wife’s clients received federal help (Chicago Tribune)
  • Two public clients the city of Naperville, and Eastern Illinois University paid Durbin’s wife more than $1 million for lobbying (Chicago Tribune)
  • The city of Naperville received millions of dollars in grants from the Federal government while she lobbied for them (Chicago Tribune)
  • Durbin awarded millions of dollars to Eastern Illinois University while his wife lobbied for them (Chicago Tribune)
  • Durbin Voted against legislation in 2007 that would have banned spousal lobbying (Washington Examiner)
  • Durbin’s former staffer Amy Ford Souders is married to Patrick Souders, Durbin’s Chief of Staff, and has her own lobbying company.  She has been lobbying for 18 years (Open Secrets)
  • Amy Ford Souders client EPIR, a Defense contractor received a total of $9 million in Earmarked funds from Durbin (Huff Post)
  • Durbin has three family members who were/are registered lobbyists: Paul Durbin (son), Marty Durbin (Nephew), and his wife Loretta Durbin (Family Affair 2014 Report)
  • Sen. Durbin’s campaign manager, Greg Bales recommended five companies to the city of Chicago to provide PPE.  Several of the companies have long-standing ties to the Democratic Party.  Three of the five companies were given no-bid contracts with the city of Chicago based on Greg Bales recommendation (BGA)
